Euthanasia is the termination of life at a patients request and is performed by a doctor (G. van Tol, Rietjens, van der Heide, 2012, p. 296) and is often confused with physician assisted suicide (PAS), which is where a physician prescribes a lethal dose of medication for the patient to take in their own time (Pereira, 2011, p. e38). The debate surrounding euthanasia is a long and tiresome one with no foreseeable end. Currently, euthanasia is legal in three countries and four US states and PAS is legal in seven countries (New Health Guide, 2015). Northern Territory was the first Australian states to allow euthanasia in 1997 but it was repealed shortly after (Elliott Olver, 2008, p. 648). I believe that Euthanasia should be legalised again throughout the whole of Australia, provided there are strict regulations and criteria involved so that terminally ill patients have the choice to die with some dignity rather than wither away to a near lifeless shell of the person they once were. W e have the right to euthanize pets, so why can’t we decide to humanely end our own lives if we are terminally ill or in unbearable pain? A depression episode on the other hand is almost opposite of a manic one. During a depressive episode, the person is sad, irritable, has low self-esteem, negative thoughts, and loss of interest in usual activities. They feel like theyre worthless and hopeless. They also have negative thoughts towards the past and future. Many people gothrough guilt, crying, or having suicidal thoughts. Unlike a manic episode, the person has lack of energy, and either an appetite loss or gain. Manic depression is a recurrent illness, so a person usually has more than one episode. These episodes can last from weeks to months. They occur whenever and have no certain pattern. Sometimes a stressful life event can trigger an episode, and sometimes they just happen. If a person has more than four episodes a year they areknown as rapid cyclers. This is more common in women. There is no exact reason for what causes manic depression, but some doctors say that it may be from imbalances of certain kinds of brain chemicals. Heredity also has a little part to do with it.
